o You need to provide detailed job descriptions. It is your job because you as the
head of the business have an overall picture of what kind of jobs positions will be required
for a smooth functioning of the business. You will be able to specify what are the skills,

o Never hurry up an interview. Take at least one hour to speak to the applicants. An
interview is never a one-way process - you are trying to gauge them just as they're trying
to gauge you. Just as you are taking time to see if they are suitable for your business,
they're taking time to see what you business has to offer them. So, be amply prepared with a
list of question, take notes of all the candidates and ask specific questions. Questions
about their skills, industry knowledge, their perceived strengths and weaknesses. Allow them
to answer some more general question like 'How would you handle a situation like ...' or 'If
your colleague is behaving like this, how would you handle it?"
o Make sure you explain clearly what is expected of them. Especially for those coming
in from large corporate houses, where all responsibilities are shared and hence less to
bear, in a small business, a lot is expected of the employees. This is doubly so in a small
start-up. Make sure you tell them what their main responsibilities will be but also make it
clear that they may be expected to work in other areas. This way there will be less chance
of feeling let down or over-burdened.
o When you offer a person a job, you are not looking for just an employee. You are
looking at growth prospects and how that person may grow with the business. This means he
may need to take up other responsibilities. You need to understand if the person is up to
that. A small business cannot afford too many people who can do only one job albeit very
competently. People who can do multitasking are more valued in small businesses.
o It always helps to give new people as much pre-job training as possible. If new
hires receive more training and guidance, they are likely to be more successful and in turn

them with older and more experienced employees who can take a few weeks to break in the new

o If you set goals for employees and motivate them to achieve them, it will boost
